Biotechnology is increasingly permeating the fields of medicine and health, agriculture and food production, industrial manufacturing, analysis, environmental and energy technologies. The Business Unit Biotechnology and Life Sciences identifies current developments, explores their effects, determines the position of Germany and Europe in international competition and analyzes the influence of  policies. Coordinator of Business Unit is Dr. Bärbel Hüsing.

The health system is facing great challenges. Innovations are of particular significance in this research- and development-intensive service sector. The Business Unit Innovations in the Health System assesses innovations in this field in terms of their contribution towards societal goals. We include the contradictory interests of all involved players groups in this process. Coordinator of Business Unit is Dr. Thomas Reiss.

Information and communication technology is increasingly shaping private and professional everyday life and is crucial for innovations and competitive advantages in almost all areas of the economy. The Business Unit Information and Communication Technologies analyzes IT-based innovations as well as new media and puts forward proposals for necessary changes in economic, political and legal framework conditions. Coordinator of Business Unit is Dr. Michael Friedewald.
