Office of the Expert Commission on Research and Innovation

The Expert Commission on Research and Innovation (EFI) consists of 6 experts who were appointed by the federal German government. It provides advice on scientific policy for the federal German government and regularly submits expertises on research, innovation and Germany's technological performance. Their first expertise was presented in February 2008. In this connection, the strengths and weaknesses of the German innovation system was comprehensively analysed, in an international and chronological comparison. Based on the most recent scientific investigations, the perspectives of Germany as a location for research and innovation will also be evaluated. Proposals to optimise the national research and innovation policy are a central component of the expertises.

The Office of the Expert Commission on Research and Innovation is the organisational centre of the reporting system and in addition conducts own scientific studies in the field of innovation research. Appropriate results are included in the experts' reports and statements issued by the Commission of Experts.

In addition, the office is responsible for inviting bids and awarding contracts for external scientific services. It coordinates the top priority and indicator studies of the participating scientific institutions and integrates their main findings in the reports of the Commission of Experts. It is also responsible for the preparation of and follow-up to the meetings of the Commission of Experts.

Fraunhofer ISI is in charge of the office, which has its seat in the Fraunhofer ISI branch at the Berlin University of Technology (TU).
