Oliver Som is deputy head of the Competence Center "Industrial and Service Innovation" at the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research in Karlsruhe, Germany. He studied Political and Social Sciences at the University of Stuttgart with particular focus on innovation and organisational theory, organisational behaviour, and quantitative and qualitative methodologies of empirical research. During his past eight years working in applied innovation research, he has been involved in a large number of research and consultancy projects dealing with the overall question how European manufacturing firms and industries can maintain and increase their innovativeness and competitive performance by technical and non-technical types of innovation. He obtained his doctoral degree on empirical research about innovation strategies of non-R&D performing firms in the German manufacturing industry.
His research focuses on innovation measurement, innovation and technology management, organisational innovation, innovation networks and collaborations, as well as industrial innovation and technology policy. On behalf of different national and international clients from the public and industry sector, he has managed research projects all characterised by a strong empirical and methodological focus. Moreover, he is scientific coordinator of the firm-level survey European Manufacturing Survey which is regularly conducted by Fraunhofer ISI in 18 European Countries and three BRIC countries, and works as a reviewer for international journals of innovation research.
